Our Work
Model Adivasi-led School
Shaping futures, staying rooted
The Vidyodaya Adivasi School is a nursery and primary school that has worked for over thirty years to create a culturally rooted, contextually relevant learning environment for Adivasi children. It emerged from a demand within the community to build an educational space that values their identity, language and lived experience, one that supports children not just to succeed in school, but to thrive in life.
Today, the school works with 125 children from 32 villages, taught by a team of 13 teachers.
VBVT’s schools are spaces where academic learning is taken seriously while remaining closely connected to children’s lives. The school is seen not as an isolated institution, but as part of the village and community ecosystem. Learning is paced, attentive and grounded, allowing children to build strong foundations without losing connection to their identity and environment.
Foundational academic learning blends with traditional Adivasi knowledge: forest and nature knowledge, traditional leadership and conflict resolution, Adivasi rights and histories, and Adivasi languages alongside Tamil and English, as well as arts and practical financial literacy.
Alongside academic learning, the school nurtures curiosity, responsibility, cooperation and a sense of belonging, so that children experience education as something that strengthens them, rather than pulls them away from who they are.
We have Vidyodaya till fifth and we can see the eagerness to study in the kids. After the fifth they wish to continue in another school to study further. We don’t see this eagerness among children who go to other schools, especially those who study in Government Tribal Residential (GTR) schools.
